Venkatesh Murthy

Melvyn Rubenfire Professor of Preventive Cardiology, Medical School

Radiology

Medical imaging, multi-omics and chronic disease

Dr. Murthy is a world expert in the application of quantitative analytic approaches to cardiometabolic disease, applying physics-based, statistical, and machine learning methods to medical imaging, metabolomic, proteomic, and genomic data.

Dr. Murthy’s research has been funded by major grants as PI from three institutes of the National Institutes of Health as well as industry and foundations. He has published numerous papers related to the role of visceral adiposity and obesity in the development of cardiometabolic diseases such as atherosclerosis, heart failure, hypertension and diabetes. He is also a leader in the development of quantitative methods for cardiac imaging with a particular focus in cardiac PET imaging. Recent work has applied statistical learning and deep learning methods to nuclear imaging and cardiovascular data. He has also developed innovative analytic strategies for multi-omics (i.e. metabolomics, proteomics, genomics) in large epidemiologic and clinical cohorts.

Multiomics of Cardiometabolic Disease – we use high-dimensional molecular and cell profiling and imaging data to define pathways of altered metabolism, inflammation, and fibrosis which arise from obesity, diabetes, and diet and culminate in heart diseases (atherosclerosis, heart failure, arrhythmia)

Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging – we apply physics-based and data science approaches to develop quantitative biomarkers from imaging data including precise measures of blood flow, fibrosis, inflammation, and contractility

After completing his B.S. and M.S. degrees at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and he earned M.D. and Ph.D. (Biophysics) degrees at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He completed internal medicine residency at Johns Hopkins followed by fellowships in cardiovascular medicine and multi-modality cardiovascular imaging at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital. He is quadruple board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular medicine, nuclear cardiology and echocardiography. He is Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Radiology and the Melvyn Rubenfire Professor of Preventive Cardiology at the University of Michigan and Associate Chief of Cardiology with a focus on Research, Translation, and Innovation. As of September 2025, he serves on the Management Committee of the Michigan Institute for Data & AI in Society.

He has authored more than 250 scientific publications, book chapters and review articles. He currently serves as Associate Editor for New England Journal of Medicine: Artificial Intelligence and has previously served as Associate Editor for Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging and editorial board member for the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology, Cardiovascular Diabetology, and Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases. He has received numerous awards for his work.

Dr. Murthy was previously President of the SNMMI Cardiovascular Council and a member of the Board of Directors. He is a Master of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC) and has also served as a member of the Quality and Safety Committee of ASNC. He has led and participated in numerous documents developed by SNMMI and ASNC.
