AI/ML for making sense of complex geologic datasets

Eva Albalghiti recently graduated from the University of Michigan with a PhD in Environmental Engineering. During her PhD, she used creative experimental approaches to investigate how mineral-precipitating microorganisms can alter the flow of fluids–like water, carbon dioxide, and hydrocarbons–in Earth’s subsurface. Her current research remains focused on the subsurface, but will require her to step outside the laboratory as she aims to characterize opportunities for geologic hydrogen energy production in the state of Michigan. To do so, she will apply AI and machine learning approaches to digitizing, analyzing, and synthesizing large quantities of geospatial-temporal data spanning many data types. This work will enable high-resolution mapping and uncertainty analysis of Michigan’s potential geologic hydrogen resources, thereby supporting researchers, policymakers, and other stakeholders who seek to identify and compare geologic hydrogen testbed sites.
