Postdoctoral training is central to MIDAS.
At MIDAS, postdoctoral training is a collaborative community focused on advancing AI and data science for societal impact. Our postdocs join an interdisciplinary network of scholars, mentors and partners shaping the future of AI across science, engineering and health. Through research, professional development and community-driven learning, MIDAS fellows gain the skills, connections and experience to thrive in academia, industry and public impact careers.

Housed at MIDAS’s north campus offices, the postdocs participate in:
- Weekly research meetings
- AI Carpentries
- Professional development and networking opportunities
- MIDAS training workshops
- An interdisciplinary research community
Comprehensive Career Preparation
MIDAS postdoctoral fellows receive career development support for roles across academia, industry, government and the nonprofit sector. Fellows benefit from:
- Access to cutting-edge AI and data science methods through faculty mentors and MIDAS’s network of 700+ affiliated U-M researchers
- Research talks featuring faculty, industry experts and postdocs working on emerging AI applications
- MIDAS Career Advancement Workshops focused on tenure-track applications, industry career pathways, resumes, interviewing and other professional development skills
MIDAS Alumni Job Placement
MIDAS postdoctoral fellows are advancing AI and data science across academia, industry, national laboratories, nonprofits and higher education administration. Alumni from our fellowship programs have gone on to faculty and staff roles at leading universities, positions at top technology companies and continued postdoctoral training at institutions around the world.

AI Carpentries
Postdocs participate in AI Carpentries — informal, postdoc-organized working groups that meet regularly to discuss AI methods and shared areas of interest. Current/past Carpentries include:

Schmidt Sciences – Community Initiative Funds
With support from Schmidt Sciences, MIDAS postdocs can propose and coordinate training workshops. 2026 funded events give MIDAS postdocs hands-on experience implementing AI for science while sharing their expertise with the broader research community
