Mabwi Humphrey holds a Doctorate in Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology awarded by Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), Tanzania in collaboration with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), Korea where he did his Doctorate degree laboratory work. He currently serves as a Lecturer of Biology at Umma University, Kenya, and as an adjunct researcher of microbiology at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Kenya.
As an Eric and Wendy Schmidt African Faculty Fellow, Humphrey focuses on the rational design and engineering of beneficial microbial communities tailored for applications in: testing health benefits of natural products, sustainable agriculture, and environmental bio-remediation. His research integrates advanced machine learning approaches, including predictive modeling, with network-based modeling frameworks, bioinformatics, and rigorous in vitro experimentation to design, optimize, and validate synthetic microbial consortia.
Humphrey is committed to leveraging Artificial Intelligence-driven platforms to engineer purpose-built microbial communities capable of addressing complex biological and environmental challenges. Through a multidisciplinary and systems-based approach, his work seeks to enhance translational drug discovery platforms, improve agricultural productivity and soil health, and develop sustainable solutions for waste management and environmental restoration using AI engineered microbial communities.
By advancing the science of engineered microbial ecosystems, Humphrey contributes to the development of innovative technologies that promote improved health outcomes, strengthened food security, and environmentally sustainable waste management practices.
