Efficient AI through neuromorphic and bio-inspired design

Sen Lu is a Postdoctoral research fellow in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science who develops brain-inspired computational models to understand how the brain efficiently processes information and perceives time. His research focuses on creating bioplausible and neuromorphic neural networks to model brain neurons such as “time cells”—the neurons that act as the brain’s internal stopwatch—with two key goals. From an engineering perspective, these models provide a blueprint for next-generation, energy-efficient artificial intelligence. For neuroscience, they offer a powerful framework to analyze theories about cognitive functions and memory disorders. Through the MIDAS fellowship, Sen aims to strengthen his AI expertise and build interdisciplinary collaborations, seeking to bridge the gap between his computational theories and real-world neurological data to accelerate progress in both understanding the brain and building more intelligent machines.
