Data-driven modeling for environmental health

Seonyoung (Shannon) Park is an environmental epidemiologist dedicated to understanding how multiple classes of environmental and social stressors jointly influence women’s and children’s health. Her research leverages advanced data science methodologies to integrate and analyze high-dimensional data streams, enabling a more comprehensive understanding of complex exposure–health relationships. In her upcoming work, she will apply a range of unsupervised learning techniques, including clustering algorithms and principal component analysis, and AI tools to characterize distinct “exposure profiles” during pregnancy. These profiles will help identify subgroups of women experiencing combined environmental and social burdens, shedding light on populations with heightened vulnerability to adverse health outcomes. By adopting this structured, data-driven approach, her research aims to strengthen causal inference regarding how multiple, co-occurring prenatal stressors shape maternal and child health trajectories. Ultimately, these findings will advance scientific understanding and provide critical insights to guide the development of actionable interventions and evidence-based public health policies.
