African Faculty Fellows Program

The Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Fellowship Program at the University of Michigan (the Schmidt AI in Science program) is seeking applications for African Faculty Fellows (AF Fellows) to join a new division in the program. The program is administered by the Michigan Institute for Data and AI in Society (MIDAS); with the University of Michigan African Studies Center (ASC) as the residential host of the AF Fellows. The new program is our global expansion effort to support African researchers and enlist talent from around the world to enable the substantive use of AI for breakthroughs in science and engineering, and cultivate global science leaders.

The Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science African Faculty Fellows program supports researchers who apply AI methodology to address significant research questions in science and engineering. The program will accept African researchers at the level of university faculty or equivalent roles in other African organizations. They will join the program for two years: in residence at the University of Michigan for a total of 12 months (in one or two visits) to develop AI-enabled research in science and engineering; and a total of 12 months in Africa to carry out research and / or training activities to enable “AI in Science”, with support from our program. We aim to enable AI-driven research breakthroughs including those particularly impactful for Africa, facilitate the development of sustained effort on AI in Science research in Africa and sustained collaboration between the University of Michigan and African scientists and institutions.
