MIDAS AI in Science Fellows Receive $100K in Funding for a Knowledge-Guided Machine Learning Workshop

On April 2nd, 2025, a proposal by five AI in Science Fellows at the Michigan Institute for Data and AI in Society (MIDAS) was awarded by the Schmidt Sciences Community Initiative Fund. They will receive $100K in funding to organize a workshop focused on Knowledge-Guided Machine Learning (KGML) at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. KGML is a rapidly emerging field that integrates physics-based principles of scientific knowledge with machine learning algorithms to improve their accuracy, interpretability, and generalizability. Knowledge-guided machine learning thus becomes the frontier of AI for Science and is widely recognized as the new paradigm of scientific machine learning.

The workshop focuses on KGML and AI for science, and the purpose of this workshop is to train AI fellows in the skills and mindset to use and lead KGML, through a combination of hands-on tutorials, lightning talks, and coding hackathons. The workshop is scheduled for mid-August 2025 and will be open to the public. Priority for participation will be given to Schmidt Fellows. The workshop will be organized by Haotian Chen, Xiaofeng Liu, Tsige Atilaw, Yiluan Song, and Nathan Fox.
