What I do: As a Data Scientist at the University of Michigan, I am passionate about leveraging data for social impact. With a holistic commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, I transform real-world data into action using statistical analysis, data mining and machine learning. My role includes programming, algorithm development, data management, analysis, and visualization, as well as outreach and usability testing. I use my specialized skill set to enhance and drive the goals behind MIDAS.
Who I am: I graduated in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science with honors in computing science, followed by a brief tenure of approximately two years at Hewlett-Packard Enterprise Services. Though my work there was fulfilling, I felt a longing for the academic realm once again and returned to the University of Stirling, Scotland. In 2019, I obtained a Doctorate of Philosophy in the field of Artificial Intelligence, expanding my knowledge and understanding of the intricacies of our technological world. My curiosity and passion led me to Michigan State University, where I spent three years immersed in the animal science department, analyzing vast genomic datasets in an effort to unravel some small insight into the mysteries of DNA. I spent a subsequent period of five months studying evolution and writing a white paper regarding the most pressing challenges facing Artificial Intelligence at BEACON, located at MSU. In 2023 I joined MIDAS to delve into the scientific world from a wider, more comprehensive perspective, alongside world-renowned experts from a multitude of fields and disciplines.
Why I’m passionate about my work: We stand at a crucial juncture in the history of machine learning and data analysis. I am committed to driving our scientific exploration in a direction that is both ethical and compassionate. Recognizing the complexities of intersectionality within society, I am convinced that any scientific progress must be made with a deep consideration of ethics. Let’s ensure that the exciting possibilities of technology are harnessed for the greater good, with a strong moral compass as our guide.
