Communicating the Value & Impact of Science to Broad Audiences

February 19, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Room 340 West Hall

Jill Jividen, PhD, Director of Research Development at the U-M Office of Research, will explore the what, why, and how of communicating research to the public. In what some consider a “post-truth” era, it is increasingly vital for scientists to communicate effectively: to explain what research means; how it changes, improves, enriches and saves people’s lives; and what the value of this work is to taxpayers, policymakers and the world. From public relations to social media, Dr. Jividen will discuss the challenges of writing for non-scientists, what channels may be used to reach broad audiences, and campus resources that can help. Use these tips for curating your online presence, boosting your impact scores and crafting a compelling story for potential partners or funders.
