Call for Student & Postdoc Research Posters

DATA Industry Advisory Board Fall 2023 Meeting

(October 12-13, 2023)

Submission deadline extended to September 26, 2023, 2 pm ET!

The Center for Data-Driven Drug Development and Treatment Assessment (DATA), an NSF-sponsored Industry-University Cooperative Research Center (IUCRC) and a unit of the Michigan Institute for Data Science (MIDAS), is inviting University of Michigan students and postdocs to submit research project posters to showcase during its Industry Advisory Board (IAB) meeting on October 12-13, 2023, in Waukegan, Illinois. We are seeking student and postdoc projects that apply computational methods, data science solutions, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques to solve problems in health care, pharmacy, chemistry, and biomedical engineering, in particular in the areas of drug design, drug repositioning, and treatment assessment.

The meeting will be hosted by one of DATA industry members and will include a number of companies from the pharmaceutical, healthcare, technology, and AI startup industries, as well as representatives of governmental agencies, offering the presenters ample opportunities to network and discuss their career plans with potential employers. In addition to the poster showcase, the meeting agenda includes a career panel and research panels and roundtables focused on the use of AI in drug design and treatment optimization.

Selected presenters will be provided with travel support to participate in the entire meeting, including transportation, meals, and an overnight stay at a local hotel.

University of Michigan students of all levels (undergraduate, masters, doctorate) and postdocs are eligible to participate. Interested applicants should submit an abstract of their project(s) by September 26, 2023, 2 pm ET using this form.

About DATA

Established in 2022, the Center for Data-Driven Drug Development and Treatment Assessment (DATA) is part of the Industry-University Cooperative Research Centers (IUCRC) Program of the National Science Foundation and a unit of the Michigan Institute for Data Science (MIDAS) at the University of Michigan. DATA advances U.S. competitiveness by working with industry to solve current, emerging, and industry-relevant challenges in drug design, drug repositioning and repurposing, treatment monitoring, assessment and optimization, patient phenotyping, and quantitative pharmacovigilance using novel computational and data science techniques such as metrology, machine learning (ML), and/or artificial intelligence (AI), including generative AI, and by training the next generation of talent in this field. DATA seeks to produce new methodologies and infrastructure for industry-wide collaborative drug discovery and treatment assessment, with the goal of significantly accelerating the pace of drug development to help target the right drug to the right person at the right safe and effective dose while reducing R&D costs.

The Center seeks to solve multiple technical challenges related to data (insufficient size and lack of diversity of patient and pharmaceutical data, lack of data standards used across the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries, compliance with privacy requirements applicable to patient and human subject data, curation & integration of the available data), and to algorithms (lack of transparency of AI/ML models, inability of many AI/ML models to learn from incomplete databases, lack of customization of the existing AI/ML methods to address the specific needs of the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries).
