CSE Faculty Seminar: Lingjia Tang, PhD

November 9, 2015 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Title: Building Systems for Future Datacenter Applications Abstract: As user demand scales for more intelligent services such as virtual personal assistants (e.g., Apple’s Siri, Google’s Google Now, and Microsoft’s Cortana), we are approaching the computational limits of current datacenters. It is an open question how future server and system architectures should evolve to enable this emerging class of applications and their underlying machine learning techniques including deep learning. In this talk, Lingjia Tang first presents the design of several such emerging applications, including 1) Sirius Lucida, an open end-to-end intelligent personal assistant that accepts queries in the form of voice and images, and responds with natural language; and 2) Djinn and Tonic, a web service that supports deep learning. She will then discuss the challenges, solutions and future directions for building systems to support these applications. Bio: Lingjia Tang is an assistant professor of CSE at the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on computer architecture and software systems, especially such systems for large scale datacenters. Her publications at ASPLOS ’15, HPCA ’ 13 and ISCA ’13 on optimizing datacenter infrastructures are reported in Wired, The Registers and ACM tech news. Her publication at Micro’11 is selected as IEEE Micro Top Picks. She received a best paper award at IEEE/ACM International Conference of Code Generation and Optimization (CGO) 2012. In addition, her publication at International Symposium of Computer Architecture is selected as one of the excellence papers 2011 by Research at Google.
